Almost every cover, housing, and shroud on a modern e-bike (motor side covers, display-unit backs, controller compartments, battery-mount face plates) is held shut by Phillips screws. Most are fine to undo with any workshop driver; the ones close to live electrical, or that you can't fully de-energize before opening, are the ones the 613VDETBI is built for. It's the Unior workshop Phillips with VDE insulation added; same blade, same handle architecture, certified for use on live electrical equipment.
When you reach for it
The Phillips-head fastener is the dominant cover-plate fastener on e-bike electronics. The 613VDETBI is the driver you keep in the e-bike bay for two situations specifically: diagnostic work where the battery is in the bike and the cover needs to come off to probe a circuit, and motor-side cover removal where the harness is still attached and the work area is millimeters from a conductor. A standard workshop Phillips would do the job most of the time without incident. Most of the time isn't all of the time, and the certification is what makes “most” into “every.”
How it differs from the standard 613
The standard Unior 613 cross-tip is built around a hardened, tempered blade with a blackened tip for wear resistance. The 613VDETBI carries the same blade geometry, the same three-material composite handle, and the same hex bolster at the base of the shaft for wrench torque. The difference is the insulation: the blade is coated up to within a few millimeters of the tip, and the handle is VDE-certified for live-electrical use. The cross-tip geometry doesn't change; it's the workshop Phillips with the electrical certification, not a thinner electrician's-only profile.

Built in Zreče, Slovenia
Unior has been forging hand tools in Zreče since 1919, and is the official technical partner of multiple World Tour and downhill teams. The 613VDETBI is what happens when a manufacturer makes both halves of the equation in-house: the workshop screwdriver and the VDE insulation come from the same factory, which is why the blade isn't a thinner electrician's profile masquerading as a workshop tool. It's the workshop Phillips with the test certification.
Pro tip from our mechanics
The Phillips VDE driver gets used more often than the matched flat-blade simply because more e-bike electrical fasteners are cross-head. Together with the flat-blade 603VDETBI, the small electrician's driver, and the diagonal cutters, it forms the four-tool VDE set we keep ready in the e-bike bay. The e-bike service workflow explains which tool maps to which job and why VDE certification matters in the first place: Servicing an e-bike: what's different from an analog bike →
