Threading nipples onto spokes is the most time-consuming step of a wheel build. A 32-spoke wheel needs 32 nipples threaded down their spokes to the same depth before any tensioning happens; doing that by hand with a screwdriver takes ten or fifteen minutes per wheel. The Speed Nipple Bit lets you do it with a cordless screwdriver, which collapses that time to two or three minutes.

This slot-head bit fits the standard slot-head internal spoke nipple, the most common nipple geometry in service across factory wheels, aftermarket wheel builds, and the bulk of the cycling industry. A small nub machined into the tip of the bit does two jobs: it keeps the bit centered in the nipple recess (so the driver doesn't walk off the nipple and skip across the rim), and it controls how far the nipple gets threaded down the spoke. When the nub touches the approaching spoke, the bit unseats from the nipple and the depth is set. Every nipple ends up at the same starting depth, which is the precondition for an even tensioning pass.

This is the workshop-efficiency tool for high-volume building. If you're building one wheel a season, a manual Nipple Driver 1751/2 is enough. If you're building a wheel a week (or a wheel a day, for a busy shop), the speed bit is the difference between a sustainable workflow and a frustrating one.

Which spoke nipples does the Speed Nipple Bit fit? It drives any conventional slot-head (screwdriver-slot) internal spoke nipple, which is the most common nipple in service on factory wheels and aftermarket builds. Both the 2.5 mm and the 1.5 mm versions of Unior article 1756 fit those same nipples; the number is the length of the depth-control pin, not a nipple size. It does not fit square-drive or internal-hex nipples, which need a matching bit.

What is the difference between the 2.5 mm and 1.5 mm bits? The only difference is the length of the depth-control pin, which sets how far each nipple threads down its spoke before the driver unseats. The 2.5 mm pin stops the nipple at a shallower starting depth, so a drill will not over-tension it. The shorter 1.5 mm pin lets the nipple thread deeper, closer to tension. Pick the one that matches how far your spokes thread into your nipples.

Do I still need a manual nipple driver, or does this replace it? The speed bit is for high-volume building, where a cordless driver threads all the nipples in two or three minutes instead of the ten or fifteen a screwdriver takes. If you build a wheel or two a season, a manual nipple driver is plenty. If you build a wheel a week or run a busy shop, the speed bit pays for itself in saved time on the first few wheels.

How should I run it on a cordless driver? Start each nipple at low speed for the first quarter-turn, then switch to high speed once it is engaged. Starting fast risks the bit walking off the nipple and stripping the slot. The 1/4" hex shank fits any standard cordless screwdriver or drill driver; run it as a drill, since the delicate threading step wants smooth low torque, not hammer blows.
