Chain Tools

Keeping your drivetrain running smoothly starts with a healthy chain. Our collection of chain tools covers everything from routine maintenance to major repairs. Whether you’re checking for stretch with a precision chain wear indicator, removing links with our master chain tool, or swapping connectors using master link pliers, Unior USA has the right gear. These European-made bicycle tools are designed for durability and accuracy, ensuring your chain stays reliable mile after mile.

  • Home mechanic, single drivetrain

The Pro Chain Tool drives a 3.4 mm pin through 6- to 12-speed derailleur chains. It is the straightforward bench answer for a mechanic servicing one or two bikes and breaking chains a handful of times a year. The screw-type drive is precise; there is no insert to swap and no decisions to make about chain format.

    Professional Chain Tool
  • Mixed fleet or SRAM AXS

The Master Chain Tool ships with a dedicated AXS Flattop support insert and is the only tool in the range that adds a 1/8" support for singlespeed and BMX chains. SRAM's own tested-compatibility document (GEN.0000000007151 Rev F) lists the 1647/2BBI as a Flattop-tested breaker. One tool covers every format in a mixed-fleet shop.

    Master Chain Tool
  • High volume or chain-off cleaning

The Chain Breaking Pliers collapse a pin-out into a single squeeze rather than a spindle rotation. A shop that opens chains for cleaning or replacement twenty times a week will notice the difference. The pliers are sized for 3/32" derailleur chains; they do not accept 1/8" singlespeed chains.

Bike chain tool FAQs

What chain tool do I need for my bike?

The answer depends on your chain's speed class and format. The Pro Chain Tool covers 6- to 12-speed derailleur chains, which includes Shimano HG and SRAM HG/PG formats. If you run SRAM AXS Flattop (12-speed road or Eagle Transmission MTB), you need the Master Chain Tool, which ships with the dedicated AXS Flattop support insert; SRAM's tested-compatibility document lists the 1647/2BBI by name. For singlespeed or BMX 1/8" chains, the Master Chain Tool is again the right pick, as it is the only tool in the range with a 1/8" support insert.

How do I know when to replace my chain?

Measure, do not guess. Chain wear is pin elongation, not plate stretch, so it is invisible without a gauge. The 0.5% elongation threshold is the replacement point for 11- and 12-speed chains; waiting until 0.75% risks deforming the cassette teeth. The Unior 1644/6 Chain Wear Indicator reads both 0.5% and 0.75% thresholds on the same body using a three-point design that isolates pin elongation from roller diameter, which matters on SRAM AXS Flattop chains specifically. The 1644/2 (manual drop-over) and 1643/4 (professional swing-arm) suit 6- to 10-speed drivetrains.

Can I reuse my master link when I reinstall the chain?

It depends on the brand and speed class. Shimano Quick-Links at 11- and 12-speed are single-use per Shimano's service documentation. SRAM PowerLock links at 10-speed and above are also single-use. KMC's reusable MissingLink variants ("R" suffix, 6-10 speed) are rated for 3-5 cycles. Wippermann Connex Links are the workshop favorite for frequent chain removal, with no published cycle limit. If you are not sure whether your link is reusable, fit a new one; the cost of a master link is small compared to the cost of a link backing out under load.

Does the SRAM AXS Flattop chain need a special tool?

Yes for breaking, and yes for wear checking. The AXS Flattop chain's asymmetric outer plate requires a support cradle that accommodates its wider profile. The Unior Master Chain Tool 1647/2BBI ships with this insert and is listed in SRAM's tested-compatibility document (GEN.0000000007151 Rev F) as a Flattop-verified breaker. For wear checking, the Flattop's larger-diameter rollers cause a two-point drop-in gauge to read a brand-new chain as already worn. The Unior 1644/6 is a three-point design that isolates pin elongation from roller diameter and reads Flattop chains correctly.

What is the difference between a chain tool and master link pliers?

A chain tool drives a rivet through the chain plate using a threaded spindle. You use it when the chain has no master link, or when you need to shorten a new chain to the right length. Master link pliers open and close a quick-link connector without requiring pin removal. Most modern Shimano, SRAM, KMC, and Campagnolo C-Link chains ship with a master link, so day-to-day reinstalls after cleaning use the pliers, not the chain tool. The Unior 1720/4DP Master Link Pliers handle both opening and closing on 6- to 13-speed chains including SRAM AXS Flattop PowerLock.
