Every workshop ends up with its torque wrench on one drive size and the socket it needs on another. Bottom bracket and cassette sockets are mostly 1/2"; a lot of the bit sockets and smaller hex drivers are 3/8". Rather than buying a second wrench, you step the drive down. The Unior 190.7/2 is that adaptor: a 1/2" square female to 3/8" square male, in chrome-vanadium.

What it does

  • Drive: 1/2" female to 3/8" male.
  • Use: puts 3/8" sockets on a 1/2" ratchet, breaker bar or torque wrench.

A drive adaptor is one of the few tools where the cheap version is genuinely worse rather than merely less pleasant. The square drive corners carry the entire load, and a soft adaptor rounds them, which then rounds the drive on the ratchet it is fitted to. Replacing a two-dollar adaptor is fine; replacing the torque wrench it destroyed is not.

Where it fits in the system

The 190.7/2 is part of the socket-drive hardware in Unior's workshop trays, and ships as standard in the 1600SOS15-US SOS tool tray alongside the two electronic torque wrenches and the 1/4" and 1/2" socket runs. Buying it standalone makes sense if you already run a 1/2" torque wrench and want to reach 3/8" sockets with it.

A note on torque accuracy

An adaptor that only changes drive size, with no offset, does not change the torque reading; the fastener stays on the wrench's centreline. That is different from a crowfoot or an extension that shifts the fastener away from the drive axis, which does change the applied torque and needs the reading recalculated. Straight step-down adaptors like this one are the safe case.

FAQ

Which end goes on the wrench, and which end takes the socket? The 1/2" female end fits the square drive on your ratchet, breaker bar or torque wrench, and the 3/8" male end carries the socket. It steps a 1/2" drive tool down to 3/8" sockets. This listing is code 603334. Unior's article 190.7/2 also covers a second code, 607975, which runs the other way as a 1/2" to 3/4" step-up for larger sockets; that is a different tool, not this listing.

Does an adaptor like this affect torque wrench accuracy? No. It is a straight inline adaptor with no offset, so the fastener stays on the wrench's axis and the value you set is the value the fastener gets. Tools that move the fastener off the drive axis, like a crowfoot or an offset extension, do change the applied torque and need the setting corrected. A straight step-down adaptor does not.

Can I use it on an impact wrench or a cordless driver? No. Unior marks the 190.7/2 as not for use with pneumatic, electric or cordless tools. It is for hand tools only: ratchets, breaker bars and torque wrenches.

What are the dimensions and what is it made from? It is 38 mm long, 23 mm in diameter at the female end, and weighs 67 g. The material is premium flex chrome vanadium steel, drop forged and entirely hardened and tempered, with a trivalent chrome plated finish to ISO 1456:2009. The square drives are made to the ISO 3316 standard, and the tool carries Unior's lifetime warranty.
