Wear gauges, calipers and meters for bike service

Most drivetrain and brake problems show up as a number before they become a noise. A chain wear indicator tells you whether the chain goes now or after one more ride, and the 1643/4 dial version reads the actual elongation from 0 to 1.2 percent. The sprocket wear indicator says whether the cassette went with it. The rotor wear indicator checks disc thickness against the published minimum. For wheels, the spoke tension meter turns a guess into a reading you can repeat on the next spoke.

Vernier calipers in analog and digital, a 13-blade feeler gauge set, the spoke, cotter and bearing gauge and a 3 m tape measure cover the rest. When the chain reads worn, our guide on when and how to replace a chain covers what comes next.
