Crank Cap Tool for Sram DUB
Crank Cap Tool for Sram DUB
SRAM DUB cranks pull off the bike the same way as Hollowtech II: loosen the two non-drive pinch bolts, unscrew the self-extracting cap on the drive side, slide the spindle out. But the cap itself doesn't engage like a Hollowtech II cap does. DUB caps have a pattern of holes around the perimeter; a Hollowtech II cap tool's splines find nothing to grip on a DUB cap, and a wrong-tool engagement strips the holes within a couple of cycles.
The Unior Crank Cap Tool for SRAM DUB has pins (not splines) that drop into the holes around the cap's perimeter. The pins seat fully before any rotation; the cap turns in unison with the tool and unthreads cleanly. One tool, dedicated geometry, no shared engagement with other cap patterns.
How it's used
Loosen the two non-drive crank-arm pinch bolts (5 mm hex on most DUB cranks) two or three full turns. Don't remove them entirely; the bolts hold the arm captive against the spindle clamp during the cap-removal step.
Press the Crank Cap Tool fully down onto the DUB cap so that all the pins seat in the perimeter holes. The seating step matters: pins that aren't fully home slip out under torque and round off the cap's drive holes. Once seated, rotate the tool clockwise to unthread the cap; DUB caps are left-hand thread on the drive side (the same convention Shimano Hollowtech II uses), so loosening direction is opposite the standard right-hand convention.
The cap rotates a few turns and then the captive bolt under it pushes the spindle outward. With the cap removed and the pinch bolts loose, the non-drive arm slides off the spindle. From the drive side, the spindle and drive-side arm now slide out of the bottom bracket as a unit.
Compatibility
- All SRAM cranks using the DUB self-extracting cap interface (Red AXS, Force AXS, Rival AXS, Apex AXS road and gravel; Eagle XX SL, XX, X0, GX, NX, SX MTB; AXS XPLR gravel)
- Not compatible with Shimano Hollowtech II cap interface (splined, not pin-pattern); for HT2, use the 1609.1 Hollowtech II Crank Bolt Tool.
Specs
- Material: premium flex plus carbon steel
- Engagement: pin-pattern, dedicated to SRAM DUB cap geometry
- Drive interface: square drive on the back face for ratchet handle (3/8″)
Built in Zreče
Unior has been forging hand tools in Zreče since 1919, and is the official technical partner of multiple World Tour and downhill teams. The Crank Cap Tool's pin geometry is matched to SRAM's DUB cap pattern rather than splined to the Hollowtech II convention; the dedicated tool exists because trying to use a HT2 cap tool on a DUB cap is the most common cause of stripped DUB caps in our service queue.
Pro tip from our mechanics
The DUB cap is plastic on most tiers. Reinstall torque is preload, not structural; finger-tight plus a quarter turn (about 0.5 Nm). The pinch bolts on the non-drive arm are the structural fastener and torque to 8.5–10 Nm per SRAM's spec. Over-tightening the cap deforms the plastic and is the second-most common reason DUB cranks come back to the bench with cap-engagement problems.
