SRAM DUB cranks use a self-extracting cap, but that cap does not engage like a Hollowtech II cap does. DUB caps have a pattern of holes around the perimeter; a Hollowtech II cap tool's splines find nothing to grip on a DUB cap, and a wrong-tool engagement strips the holes within a couple of cycles.

The Unior Crank Cap Tool for SRAM DUB (1609.2DUB/5) has four pins, not splines, that drop into the holes around the cap's perimeter. The pins seat fully before any rotation; the cap turns in unison with the tool and unthreads cleanly. One tool, dedicated geometry, no shared engagement with other cap patterns.

How it's used

This socket turns the SRAM DUB self-extracting cap. Drive it with a 1/2" ratchet or torque wrench, or hold the 24 mm flats with an open-end wrench. SRAM publishes the cap as reverse-threaded: it tightens counter-clockwise and loosens clockwise.

Press the Crank Cap Tool fully down onto the DUB cap so that all the pins seat in the perimeter holes. The seating step matters: pins that aren't fully home slip out under torque and round off the cap's drive holes. Once seated, rotate the tool clockwise to unthread the cap. SRAM publishes 14 Nm, counter-clockwise, for the self-extracting cap when you use a dedicated pin-drive tool.

The cap is a self-extractor, not a bearing-preload thumbwheel. Once it is off, the crank bolt underneath is typically an 8 mm hex; SRAM publishes that bolt at 54 Nm. This tool does not turn the crank bolt.

SRAM publishes 14 Nm, counter-clockwise, for the self-extracting cap when you use a dedicated pin-drive tool. Caps that only take a 2.3 mm pin spanner are hand-tight. The 1/2" square in this tool is there so a torque wrench can actually hit 14 Nm.

FAQ

Which cranks does the 1609.2DUB/5 fit? Unior's official fitment is all SRAM DUB cranks that use the DUB self-extracting cap. Pins on the tool drop into the holes on that cap. It does not fit Shimano Hollowtech II preload caps, which are splined; those take the 1609.1 Hollowtech II Crank Bolt Tool.

Does the 1609.2DUB/5 work on a Shimano Hollowtech II cap? No. Hollowtech II caps are a splined interface. DUB self-extracting caps are a four-pin hole pattern. A splined HT2 tool finds nothing to grip on a DUB cap and will round the holes; this pin socket will not drive an HT2 cap either.

How do you drive the 1609.2DUB/5, and what torque does SRAM publish for the cap? The socket has a 1/2 inch square for a ratchet, fixed handle, or torque wrench, plus 24 mm flats for a vice or open-end wrench. SRAM publishes the self-extracting cap as reverse-threaded and tightens it counter-clockwise to 14 Nm with a dedicated pin-drive tool (or a 10 mm hex on caps that take one). A 2.3 mm pin spanner is hand-tight only.
