Overhead shop lighting and a polished rotor are a bad combination. Fluorescent tubes or LED panels overhead wash out the working area of a rotor, a chainstay, or any other reflective surface you're trying to sight along. The brim of a cap is the cheapest possible shop-lighting solution; it cuts the glare from the overhead source so your eye can resolve the part you're working on.

A flat brim sits closer to the eye line than a curved one. That's the practical case for it in a shop: more brim in front of more of your visual field, more shading where the overhead lights are coming from. The aesthetic case is whatever you want it to be; the working case is the lighting.

We made our flat brim with a raised UNIOR logo on the front (not a flat printed graphic), Made For Work icon on the back of the band, and a snapback closure. The snapback adjusts in steps, which is the way snapbacks are; it's the closure that holds a position best under a helmet or under the strap of a workshop face shield. One size fits most.

Specs

  • Brim: flat, high-peak profile

Built by a tool company

Unior has been forging hand tools in Zreče, Slovenia, since 1919, and is the official technical partner of multiple World Tour and downhill teams. The Made For Work line sits alongside the tool catalog as its apparel-and-gear counterpart. A flat-brim cap is a small detail, but the raised front logo and the snapback step adjustment are the kind of detail that separates a working-shop cap from a souvenir cap.

Pro tip from our mechanics

If your shop runs overhead LED panels and your work involves a lot of sighting along reflective surfaces (rotors, polished cassettes, chainstays for paint inspection), the flat brim is a real ergonomic choice; not just an aesthetic one. For a softer in-between fit that packs under a helmet, the Single Panel Strap Back Hat is the call; for winter, the knit cap is the layer.
