The derailleur hanger is the part of the bike most likely to bend. It's a sacrificial alignment piece: a soft aluminum bracket that bolts the rear derailleur to the frame and is built to deform first when the bike falls on its drive side. Once it's bent (even a fraction of a degree) every shift on the cassette becomes a small fight. The cable pulls the derailleur to where the index command says, but the derailleur arrives a few millimeters off the cog the rider asked for. Modern 11- and 12-speed drivetrains punish even half a millimeter of misalignment with sloppy shifts. The Hanger Genie 2.0 brings the hanger back to where the drivetrain expects it.

The 2.0 vs the original Hanger Genie

The 2.0 is the second generation of our hanger alignment tool. Here's what's actually new, and what carries straight over from the original.

  • New: sealed bearing in the thread-in axle. On the 2.0 the thread-in axle turns on a sealed bearing: smooth under load, and sealed for longevity.
  • New: extended thread-in axle provides additional clearance, which matters specifically on modern full-suspension frames where the chainstay yoke crowds the hanger area.
  • New: gauge storage clips on the body. Set the gauge to a measurement, lock it, reposition the tool around the wheel without losing the reference. The lockable gauge itself carries over from the original; the clips are what's new, keeping the gauge stored and protected on the tool between measurements.
  • Rotating bottom part carries over from the original: it clears the frame and accessories during rotation, so you don't have to remove the wheel or fight the chainstay to swing the tool to the next reference position.
  • Heavier build: Unior's published specs put the 2.0 at 1250 g against the original's 959 g, with the same 250 mm folded length.

Pro tip from our mechanics

The hanger is rarely the only thing out of true. Before you call a bent hanger fixed, run a quick gauge check on the rear dropouts with the Dropout Alignment Gauges 1692/4. If the dropouts are off, the hanger will check straight against gauges that are themselves measuring from a crooked reference. You'll fix the hanger to match a frame that isn't square, and the bike will still shift badly. Hanger after dropouts; never the other way around.

What's the difference between the Hanger Genie 2.0 and the original Hanger Genie? The measuring workflow is identical: thread the tool into the hanger, set the lockable gauge against the rim, and compare readings around the wheel. The 2.0 adds a sealed bearing in the thread-in axle, extends that axle for clearance on full-suspension frames, and adds clips that store the gauge on the tool body. It's also heavier: 1250 g versus 959 g for the original. Unior rates the 2.0 for 26″, 27.5″/650B and 29″/700 wheels, where the original was rated 20″ through 29″+. Both are in our catalog.

Which bikes and wheel sizes does the Hanger Genie 2.0 fit? Unior rates it for the most common wheel sizes: 26″, 27.5″/650B and 29″/700. The axle threads into the standard M10 x 1 derailleur-hanger thread, so road, gravel, mountain and e-bikes are all covered as long as the derailleur mounts to a threaded hanger.

Do I have to remove the rear derailleur to use it? Yes. The tool screws directly into the derailleur hanger's threads, taking the derailleur's place while you measure. Unbolt the derailleur, thread the Hanger Genie 2.0 in with its T-handle, check and correct the hanger against the rim, then reinstall the derailleur.

Are spare parts available for the Hanger Genie 2.0? Yes. Unior maintains official spares for the 1602/5: a four-piece gauge clip set (article 1602.4) and a replacement straight gauge (1602.2/5). Neither is listed on uniorusa.com today, so contact us if you need one.
