Cable Housing Cutters

Sharing most of the same design as our old 584/2POLLY cutters, the new 584/4BI use higher quality steel and better induction hardening along the cutting edges for longer life. A new style of crimper helps to make sure those cable tips never come off.

Housing only, and why

The jaws are developed for cutting brake and shift housing: they cut precisely and smoothly, without deforming the housing, so the cut end stays round and the inner cable still slides freely.

Unior's advisory on the datasheet is plain: to preserve the cutting performance, do not use these pliers on shift or brake inner wires, or on spokes. Those cuts belong to a side cutter.

Crimper and lock

The crimping function is built into the head. Once a cable is trimmed, slide an end cap over the wire and crimp it closed in the same tool, so the strands cannot fray.

A locking mechanism holds the pliers closed for easier storing. To unlock it, squeeze the handles and release: the return spring opens the jaws again.

Pro tip from our mechanics

Cut the new housing off the bike, matched against the old piece, and cut it a little proud rather than short: you can always take another few millimeters off. Crimp the end cap only after the cable is tensioned and the shifting is set, since the cap has to come off again if you need to re-pull the cable. What does the 584/4BI-US cut? Brake and shift housing only. The jaws are developed to cut housing precisely and smoothly, without deforming it, so the cut end stays round. Unior's official advisory is not to cut shift or brake inner wires or spokes with these pliers, to preserve cutting performance. For inner cables, use a side cutter such as the 461/1VDEBI.
